The new cross-disciplinary display of the LaM collection highlights the artistic, aesthetic and conceptual resonances of certain works with the themes running through the triennial. Modern artists have been interested in the mechanical energies developed by industrialisation and the poetic possibilities they open up in the arts. With the invention of atomic weapons, some outsider art artists produced a particular iconography expressing a certain form of anguish in the face of the destructive potential of the military-industrial complex. The strong presence of spiritualist painters in the collection raises the question of an original energy, the source of creation, that might come from beyond. The question of energy is also present in works that are always in transformation because of their material instability.
