On Kawara
1932-2014,
On Kawara (Kariya, Japan, 1932 – New York, USA, 2014) was an artist associated with conceptual art. Since the mid-1960s, On Kawara’s work has largely revolved around biographical data related to his experience of space and time.
On Kawara exhibited in major institutions worldwide, and his works are part of the collections of international museums, including the Centre Georges Pompidou/Musée national d’art moderne in Paris, the MoMA and Whitney Museum in New York, the Tate Modern in London, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and others.
In 2015, a retrospective of the artist’s work titled “On Kawara—Silence” was organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, offering a comprehensive representation of the artist’s practice from 1964 onwards.
