Mercedes Azpilicueta

Mercedes Azpilicueta (La Plata, Argentina, 1981) lives and works in Amsterdam. Using video, sculpture, installation, poetry and performance, her work explores the affective qualities and political dimension of language and voice, in relation to notions of performativity, postcolonial feminism and resistance.

Before graduating in Fine Art in 2013 at the Dutch Art Institute/ArtEZ in Arnhem, she studied at the National University of the Arts (UNA) in Buenos Aires. From 2015 to 2017, Azpilicueta was also artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. In 2018, she presented her first solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires, after receiving the Pernod Ricard Fellowship (Paris) in 2017. Her work has been exhibited at CAC Brétigny and Gasworks, London (2021), Museion-Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain Bozen/Bolzano (2020), Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven) and CentroCentro, Madrid (2019), REDCAT Gallery (Los Angeles, 2018), MACBA (Barcelona, 2018), Centre d’Art Dos de Mayo (CA2M, Móstoles, 2017), Onomatopee (Eindhoven, 2016), TENT (Rotterdam, 2015), Móvil (Buenos Aires, 2015), Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin, 2014) and Het Veem Theatre (Amsterdam, 2014). She is represented by Nogueras Blanchard, Spain.
