Maika Garnica
1992, Anvers, Belgique
Maika Garnica (Dendermonde, Belgium, 1992) lives and works in Antwerp. She holds a Master in Fine Arts and a Master of Research in Art and Design from the Sint Lucas Antwerpen School of Art (Antwerp).
The relationship between the environment, the spectator, and the artist is at the core of Maika Garnica’s practice. She often applies prototypes to understand the complex relationship between form and material while giving the body the status of a vehicle for social connections. Depending on the context, the nature of her work spontaneously changes, ranging from sculptures and functional instruments to performative sound installations.
Maika’s work has already been presented in exhibition spaces in Helsinki, Geneva, The Hague, and several cities in Belgium. In 2015, she received the Academia Belgica Prize in Rome.
