Jean-Philippe Lenclos (Beuvry, 1938) is a colorist. After studying in Lille, he continued his education in Paris at the Boulle School and the National School of Decorative Arts. In 1961, Jean-Philippe Lenclos received a scholarship to continue his studies at the Kyoto School of Fine Arts. In 1978, he founded the Atelier 3D Couleur (design and color) and collaborated with companies, collectives, and architects.
In 1982, he published “Couleurs de la France, Géographie de la Couleur” (Colors of France, Geography of Color). In this pedagogical book, he developed the concept of “geography of color,” systematically inventorying the colors used in the regional habitat of France. Each geographical location, with its geology, climate, and light, generates socio-cultural behaviors concerning the use of color, whether in housing or consumer goods.
