Erich Hartmann

Erich Hartmann (Munich, Germany, 1922 – New York, United States, 1999) was an American photographer. His work is rich and varied: from the 1950s, he captured portraits of celebrities in New York. He quickly gained recognition for his poetic approach to the worlds of architecture, science, and industry; his photographs were published in several renowned magazines. In 1952, Erich Hartmann joined the Magnum Photos agency. He also produced photographic reports, catalogs, and brochures mainly in color, for companies such as IBM, Nippon Airways, Boeing, RCA, Ford Motor, and Citroën.
In the 1980s, he worked on photographs of concentration and extermination camps in Europe. He published a book titled “In The Camps” containing over thirty photographs documenting this tragic history.
