Bernd et Hilla Becher
1931-2007 / 1934-2015,
Bernd Becher (Siegen, Germany, 1931 – Rostock, Germany, 2007) and Hilla Becher (Potsdam, Germany, 1934 – Düsseldorf, Germany, 2015) were a German couple of photographers. They began working together in 1957. In a methodical manner and following a consistent shooting protocol, Bernd & Hilla Becher documented the architecture of industrial buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe and North America. Their practice was honored with the Golden Lion for sculpture at the Venice Biennale in 1990.
Their first book “Anonyme Skulpturen” was published in 1970. In 2004, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Museum of Düsseldorf dedicated a retrospective to them, and in 2008, the MoMA in New York organized the exhibition “Bernd and Hilla Becher: Landscape/Typology.”
